When the alleged father's DNA sample is not available for testing, it may be possible to determine paternity by testing close relatives of the alleged father. As example, this test may determine if a child is a nephew or if individuals are full or half siblings. Please consult the laboratory before choosing individuals to be tested.

A grandparent study can be performed to determine paternity when a DNA specimen is unavailable from the alleged parent. Ideally, grandparent testing analyzes specimens from the child's mother, the child and both of the alleged father's biological parents. It is possible to perform the test without the child's mother, but it may require additional testing and significantly more time.
